About the Mission

The Indian Ocean Mission is a major global scientific collaboration that aims to create a step-change in our knowledge of the Indian Ocean and catalyze its sustainable governance.

Mission II consists of six research cruises in six distinct bioregions of the Indian Ocean from West (Mozambique Channel and Seychelles), to Central (Mauritius and Maldives) and East (Andaman and Sumatra). The Mission combines four major activities – scientific research, capacity development, advancement of policy, and public engagement – to deliver the greatest coordinated impact. The Mission will conclude with a State of the Indian Ocean Summit in November 2021.

The Mission has been endorsed by International Indian Ocean Expedition 2 (IIOE-2), part of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (UNESCO-IOC).

Our CEO, Robert Carmichael, takes Associated Press reporter David Keyton on NEMO sub off a coral atoll called St. Joseph in the outer islands of Seychelles. Read AP’s full article here.

It’s about time we took the next giant leap: into the deep ocean – beneath 200m (656 ft) – is the beating heart of our planet, and our largest and most vital ecosystem. Yet for some reason we have better maps of Mars than we do of our own seabed and at least 95% remains unexplored The most important part of our planet is the least known and this clearly isn’t very sensible. It’s time to go deep. Welcome to First Descent – Nekton Mission II – to the Indian Ocean, the least explored ocean on our planet.

Scientific Research: Into the Bathyal Zone (200-3000m), the home of greatest biodiversity – to undertake collaborative, multi-disciplinary research on state of the Indian Ocean to help create a step change in our knowledge and understanding of marine life and human impacts.

Catalyze Policy: To generate and apply targeted, actionable open-access data to catalyze policy and accelerate the sustainable development and governance of the Indian Ocean.

Capacity Development: To develop greater expertise in marine science, conservation and ocean management across the Indian Ocean.

Public Engagement & Education: To promote the exploration of the deep ocean to inspire people with greater ocean awareness giving decision makers a greater public mandate to act.
